Everything You Need to Know About Claude Skills

Skills arrived quietly in Claude.ai and immediately changed how people use the product. But the explanations Anthropic offers are — let's be polite — sparse. So here's the version that actually tells you what's going on.

The problem Skills solve

Before Skills, using Claude with your real work meant constant copy-pasting. Check your email, paste it in. Look up something online, paste the results in. Read a document, paste it in. Claude was smart but isolated.

Skills break down that wall. When you enable the Gmail skill, Claude can read your inbox directly. When you enable web search, it pulls live results from the internet. You ask, it fetches, it answers — all in one step.

How Skills actually work

Each skill is an OAuth integration. When you enable a skill, you're authorizing Claude (technically Anthropic) to make API calls to that service on your behalf. The permission scope is shown clearly before you authorize — you're not signing a blank check.

Once authorized, the skill appears as an available tool in your Claude conversations. Claude decides when to use it based on context. Ask "what emails did I get this morning?" and Claude will invoke the Gmail skill. You don't have to tell it to — it figures that out on its own.

Skills vs MCP servers — the short version

Skills work in your browser at claude.ai. MCP servers run on your local machine inside Claude Desktop. Skills are simpler to set up. MCP is more powerful and keeps your data local. Both are worth knowing about — they're complementary, not competing.

If you want the full breakdown, we wrote a dedicated comparison.

Which plan do you need?

Most Skills require at minimum a free Claude.ai account. Some — including the most powerful ones like Computer Use — require Claude Pro ($20/month as of early 2026). Check each skill's page for current plan requirements, as Anthropic does change these.

The skills actually worth enabling

Honestly, start with web search. It transforms Claude from a static knowledge base into something that knows what happened last Tuesday. After that, Gmail and Google Calendar are the two highest-ROI skills for anyone who lives in their inbox. The complete ranked list is in our Best Claude Skills 2026 guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Claude Skills are official integrations that let Claude connect to apps you already use — like Gmail, Google Calendar, or web search. You enable them in Claude.ai settings and authorize access with one click.

Most Skills are free to enable. A free Claude.ai account is enough for most integrations, though some require Claude Pro. See our free Skills guide for a complete list.

Go to claude.ai → Settings → Integrations. Find the skill, click Enable, and complete the OAuth flow. The skill activates immediately — no restart needed. Full guide: How to Add Skills to Claude.

Skills use standard OAuth, the same technology major apps use for third-party logins. You can revoke access at any time. Read our security guide for the full picture.

Use Skills if you want easy browser-based integrations. Use MCP servers if you want local control, custom integrations, or you work in Claude Desktop. Most power users end up using both. Full comparison here.
